1The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:123 December 2021

๐Ÿ˜ผ Before I even go on to read the response of Jesus to ๐Ÿ˜ these guys, let me give them this ๐Ÿ˜ผ wry smile ๐Ÿ˜ผ ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’

I ๐Ÿค” mean, really. Are they serious? Raising the dead, feeding 5000, restoring maimed and blind.

All this is not enough. What will a sign from heaven do to change the hearts ๐Ÿ’• of these people?

It's an attempt in futility.

2He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:423 December 2021

I love that... He left them and departed, of course ๐Ÿ‡ not without telling them his mind.

5And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

6Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

8Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?

9Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

10Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

11How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

12Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

1.
cause (dough or bread) to rise by adding yeast or another raising agent.
"it only takes a little bit of yeast to leaven the bread."

Leaven leavens the whole bread ๐Ÿฅช, so wrong doctrine as that of the Pharisees can destroy and corrupt an entire church โ›ช.

13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:1320 October 2022

Why did he ask this question ๐Ÿ™‹ in Caesarea Philippi?

14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:1820 October 2022

You, Peter, a smaller part of the bigger rock.

19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

20Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2020 October 2022

Yes, they should tell no man, because if all men know, they will destroy the purpose of God... i.e. that the Christ must die.

And we know men; there is no way they will allow the Christ to die.

The only way for Christ to die is for the people to not know that they are crucifying the Lord of glory.

Jesus actually actively facilitated his own death โ˜ .

Strange man he was... Who does that?

21From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2123 December 2021

Having now gained perfect understanding of who Jesus was and confirming what was in their hearts ๐Ÿ’• by vocalizing it,

he now began to open ๐Ÿ”“ up levels and dimensions of understanding to his disciples.

Revelation thus begets revelation. As you cross over and begin to understand God more and more,

more is opened up to you.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2120 October 2022

It's almost as if Jesus was waiting for his disciples to get the revelation of him as the Christ before going to the cross.

It was important for continuity of the mission after his death.

It was almost like the cue he was looking for was here, so now he could prepare himself for the cross โž•.

Maybe that was the sign he was to look for; that was the sign that now his mission was done and it was time to move on.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2121 March 2025

Such a counteraction.

He knew that with them knowing he was the Christ, they run the risk of making him king ๐Ÿ‘‘, as the Christ rightly is.

But he knew that at this time he was a lamb, not a king.

He was to be slaughtered, not enthroned.
So he began immediately to put things in perspective.

22Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

23But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2323 December 2021

Why address him as Satan? Was Jesus discerning that Satan had entered into Peter, or he used it like we do when someone does something wrong and we go like, you devil ๐Ÿ‘ฟ?

Because really, what Peter was suggesting, that Jesus die not, was very grievous and deserving of being called a devil.

He was suggesting the whole world ๐Ÿ—บ should continue on in darkness, for which Christ came to save it from death โ˜ .

24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2420 October 2022

Hmm... Yes, Jesus had set his mind and face towards the cross.

And so he tells his disciples โ€” that is the way of the follower of Christ, denying yourself and setting your face aggressively to the cross โž•.

25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2520 October 2022

In other words, if you lose your life for me, just as I will be resurrected on the third day, I will resurrect what you lose in your quest for me, both in this life and after your death, eternal life.

26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

28Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

NII OKAI ยท Matthew 16:2823 December 2021

What does this mean, and who did it make reference to?
