1Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.

2Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

3If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

4But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

5I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.

6My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

Hm πŸ€”. Did David or the psalmist mean this literally?

Who are they that wait for the morning...

Other versions bring clarity: they that watch for the morning as watchmen.

Now I get it. Indeed, when you are on night watch, you battle sleep to keep your watch, you battle time as the clock πŸ•’ barely seems to move.

Indeed there is yearning and desiring for the morning and the dawn of light.

David, being in the army, had kept the watches severally, for the rest of your comrades' lives depend on it, so you must keep watch.

I can imagine David keeping the watches and yearning for the morning, and then he begins to think upon the goodness of the Lord.

He then compares his love and yearning for the Lord with his yearning for the break of day when his watches would end.

He knows that just as the brink of day matches with freedom and rest from the watches, so when God breaks forth upon him like the morning lights, his rest would come and all this labour would end.

As he meditated upon the Lord, he realized his need and yearning for the Lord actually supersedes that of the yearning for the day...

Indeed his soul waits and is willing to wait for the Lord more than they that watch for the night.

Now I wonder what prompted such thoughts πŸ’ and ideas in David's mind to start with.

He was just there and such fantastic and wonderful thoughts about God come to his mind...

Indeed he was a man after God's own heart πŸ’•

7Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

8And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
