Read Genesis 19 in the app

1And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

2And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

3And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:327 October 2023

Is there any uniqueness to the bread being unleavened?

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:318 January 2024

Usually angels are quick to appear and equally quick to disappear.

Less so to think of coming to dwell comfortably in one's home 🏡?

Also angels do not mingle with men, they come to deliver their message to whoever and just go.

But these angels were so different, so not angel like.

One they come suddenly which is usual,

Then they come in and wait publicly in full glare of Abraham, Sarah and their help who prepared the meal. At least these three are mentioned in Abraham's case.

Next they go to gates of an entire city and move in all night to dwell with Lot.

And let's presume Lot did not know they were angels? Meaning they still maintained their secrecy.

Reminds me of when Jesus, after his resurrection, now divine, and thus moved in and out of mankind rather than dwell as when he was a man,

As he walked with the men on the road to Emmaus.

They did not know him yet their heart burned 🔥 when he spoke.

I believe these beings included Jesus or should I say the word. These were no angels or rather no normal angels.

So let's presume Lot did not know they were angels, so he welcomes complete strangers to his home, how unlikely especially in a city like Sodom and Gomorrah.

How about if they were sodomites.

Or maybe he had realised how these sodomites treated strangers who did not know the depravity of the city and passed there for the night 🌃.

Granted, then how about when they struck the people with blindness.

He knew. He knew who they were yet these angels stayed with him.

They were angels in the same way the holy spirit is called an angel, i.e. the angel of God's presence.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:319 January 2026

This unleavened bread so reminds me of the Passover - death was coming just as it did to Egypt, it was for Sodom.

And here also they break unleavened bread.

4But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

5And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

6And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,

7And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

8Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:827 January 2022

I believe after such incessant pleading 🙏 for the angels to come under his roof, he was now under obligation to defend them with all he could.

Though offering his daughters to these beasts was quite extreme.

And why did they want these two ✌ new men? Had they had enough of themselves? Were men already finished in the city 🏙?

9And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:927 January 2022

Did Lot know who they were? I think 🤔 so.

10But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:1018 January 2024

… And shut to the door.. Is that a typo?

11And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:11

This goes to show the degree of depravity of these men such that even after being struck with blindness, they still persisted in their depravity.
I believe the blindness spoken about here is as the one in the case of Elisha when the entire army was struck blind such that they saw only what was permitted for them to see. Not that they went completely blind, I think.
I mean upon realising suddenly Lot's door was no longer visible, they should have realised what was happening but still continued to search for the door.

12And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:1227 October 2023

These did not exhibit omniscience. Could it therefore mean they were mere angels who accompanied the LORD and not the Godhead in bodily forms?

13For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

14And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:1427 October 2023

Lot believed the angels but his sons did not. How did he know they were divine beings?

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:1419 January 2026

He had no control over his household unlike Abraham whom even the lord recognized his authority over his house.

15And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:1518 January 2024

Okay so the angels spoke plainly of their divine mission and nature and stayed with Lot till morning.

No angel 😇 does this nor behaves as such.

16And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:1627 October 2023

Why did they not just snap their fingers for them to appear in the mountains?

Spiritual things are not that way it seems. They physically carried them and dragged them literally. I'm sure like Moses, as they left heaven they were given specific gifts and powers to use in case of any hindrance. Also just like the two men who could call down fire 🔥 and famine at the end of time, I guess the angels 😇 also had their limited abilities.

They could not do as they wished. Same with the spirit's gifts... We don't do as we wish but as given by the Spirit.

17And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:1727 October 2023

Again limits of the mission.. The plains. The mountain ⛰ was safe but not the plain.

18And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

19Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

20Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, ( is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

21And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

22Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:2227 October 2023

So there were limits and briefings of the assignment the angels had.

23The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

24Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:24

God is still God of the whole earth and reigns as he sees fit. He still judges the nations and is God of the earth.

25And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

27And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:

28And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:2827 October 2023

A true intercessor, watching over the plain to see if the city 🏙 was saved or salvaged.

He saw the smoke ascending. To receive such punishment shows the depth of wickedness.

Men who would do such to visitors and there was no law to restrain them.

29And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:2927 October 2023

By this time Abraham's faith in God was great, he, God, was showing him his supremacy above all gods.

He, God, was the true God and monarch 👑 of the universe 🌌.

Destroying cities regardless of the feigned protection other gods had offered

Lot, though he had left Abraham, was still benefiting from the father of nations.

Relationships are so crucial.

30And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:3027 October 2023

See so invariably he went to the mountains mount 🗻

Now Lot 🧘‍♂️, once a very rich man, was left with just his two daughters.

What became of his massive wealth 🧐.

All gone.

31And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

33And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

34And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:3419 January 2026

Lot at this time I can imagine was an unhappy man, possibly depressed, he had lost his home, wife, properties etc.

Drinking was what was used by his daughters to commit such incest. Likely very common practice in Sodom.

35And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

36Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:3618 January 2024

What depravity what an excuse.

They had so lived among the sodomites that though they had left Sodom, Sodom was still in them.

For their conscience not to prick them, I can imagine the depravity of the city 🏙.

37And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

NII OKAI · Genesis 19:3727 October 2023

Sad sad ending, who says there was no man in the earth 🌎 😔.

They chose the wrong way out. So much depravity had they witnessed so this was easy for them to do.

The fact that both were of the same mind shows how the entire family 👪 was corrupted.

38And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Ben-ammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
